The return of the League of Red Cross Societies to Switzerland from Paris in 1939 assured continuity and solidarity between all National Societies and with the ICRC.

The two institutions worked together in a joint international Red Cross relief commission to help civilian victims of war.

Colonel de Muralt, former president of the Swiss Red Cross, said in September 1939: "Through this spirit of collaboration that it has made so active in the Red Cross world, and to which its universal character gives so much strength, the League constitutes a bond of great practical and moral importance between the sister Societies".

The League's acting-chairman for the year after Davis died, de Muralt in October 1945 welcomed delegates from 42 countries at the post-war Advisory Conference of National Red Cross Societies, who, he said, manifested their will "to maintain the independance of the National Societies with respect to their own governments".
