Founded in 1919 under the name "League of Red Cross Societies", the
institution became the "League of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies" in 1983.
It adopted its current name in 1991. Chairman of the Board of Governors are
elected every four years.
(The title "chairman" was used up to 1977. It then became "president")
