Daniel, George, Lucky & Co.
CICR, 1999
Liberia, 1999 - a country weakened by years of horrific
war. The ICRC organized a series of concerts, sporting and
other events designed to foster respect for humanitarian
principles and the Geneva Conventions:
- a unique football match illustrating the need to observe the
'rules of the game' and featuring George Weah, a native of
Liberia who was crowned FIFA World Player of the Year 1995;
- an open-air concert given by Lucky Dube - the first
international star to perform in Liberia since the war -
before an audience bringing together civilians and military
personnel;
- the unveiling of a statue, the work of Liberian artists, in
Monrovia's main square, to mark the 50th anniversary of the
Geneva Conventions.
The ICRC also set up role-playing and other practical
exercises for the military to demonstrate the application of
international humanitarian law.
Available from the ICRC in English and French. VHS. Sfr. 20.
