older people. The report argues for a fundamental shift in
policy and opinion on ageing to reflect the real economic
and social contributions of older people. Case studies and

of older people in the world's poorest countries.

The Red Cross and the Holocaust
by Jean-Claude Favez Cambridge University Press, 1999
At the ICRC's request, Jean-Claude Favez carried out research
into this sensitive but important subject. He made an exhaustive
search of the institution's archives to study the ICRC's activities
on behalf of the victims of Nazi persecution, including German
political detainees and Jewish emigrés up to 1939. Did the
ICRC fulfil its duty in the face of political and racial oppression
in Hitler's Europe? This remarkable study ends with the ICRC
giving its point of view and attempting to explain the circumstances
surrounding this dark period of its history.
Available in English from Cambridge University Press, Cambridge,
1999, Sfr 55. Also available in French from Payot, Lausanne,
1988, reprint 1996, Sfr 40.

Hungarian October: between Red
Cross and red flag : the 1956 action of the International Committee of the
Red Cross
By Isabelle Voneche Cardia
Drawing on ICRC archives, the author analyses the organization's
humanitarian work in Hungary during the events of 1956. She
begins by discussing the relationship between the ICRC and
the USSR before the events, and the ties that existed between
Hungary and the USSR. She then goes on to describe the ICRC's
activities in Hungary, dividing them into three separate periods:
the insurrection, the setting up of ICRC delegations in Vienna
and Budapest, and the visits to the country by ICRC delegates
following the closure of the permanent delegations.
Available in English from the ICRC, Geneva, 1999. Sfr 20.
Also available in French from Bruylant, Brussels, 1996, Sfr
