Community-based psychological support:
A training manual
International Federation
Geneva, 2003
Critical events, such as disasters, conflicts, wars, accidents
and health epidemics bring with them social and psychological
consequences that often undermine people's ability to carry
on with their lives. Traditional approaches to disaster and
emergency assistance have often neglected the psychological
impact of crises on affected populations.
This training manual builds on the experience of psychological
support programmes implemented by National Societies following
major natural and man-made disasters over the past decade.
It also covers the latest developments in the field as well
as recommended methodologies. In general, the manual contains
information on the skills and techniques required to provide
the kind of support which helps people function under the
extraordinary level of stress found in most disaster or critical
event situations.
Available in English and Spanish.

This new film highlights the ICRC's innovative urban voucher
programme and its work providing economic assistance to the
most vulnerable sectors of the Palestinian population. The
film reflects how the programme is carefully balanced, calling
on Israel, as occupying power, to respect its obligations
under the Fourth Geneva Convention and to take measures that
will enable this population to resume as normal a life as
possible and to respond to their humanitarian needs.

Lives on hold: ICRC action in western Georgia
ICRC, Geneva, 2002
This ten-minute film focuses on the work carried out by the
ICRC in western Georgia, assisting thousands of people who
are experiencing serious hardship after years of conflict
and economic depression. It focuses on the ICRC's work on
behalf of those who have nowhere else to turn, providing basic
food supplies and helping the housebound in their homes. Interviews
with people in the towns of Zugdidi and Kutaisi reveal the
depth of their suffering and the urgent need for both help
and hope.
