International Review of the Red Cross, 2006 – No.
863: Private military companies/No. 864: Methods of warfare
ICRC, 2006
The private military and security industry is growing, with
some estimating annual contracts to be in the US$ 10-20 billion
range and others citing figures as high as US$ 100 billion.
What main roles do they play and what are their main areas
of operation in armed conflicts? Which status should they
have according to international law? In this timely edition
of the International Review of the Red Cross, a wide range
of authors addresses these questions as well as the issue
of corporate civil liability for companies involved in violations
of humanitarian law. In its latest edition, the International
Review illustrates some aspects of present-day methods of
warfare and their implications on the evolution of applicable
rules for the conduct of hostilities.
