The
Manila Declaration
Improved reporting on humanitarian issues,
compliance with international humanitarian law, and protecting
journalists are all critical parts of ensuring that the story
of vulnerable people is properly told. In East Asia, South-east
Asia and the Pacific, for example, the media play a critical
role in covering conflict and violence. In October 2011,
the ICRC hosted a conference for
50 senior media representatives who shared best practices
and made recommendations concerning the protection of journalists
and how best to cover humanitarian emergencies. One key result
was The
Manila Declaration, a set of commitments to improve reporting
and push for greater protection for media workers. For
