A member of the German Red Cross leadership since 1979, Prince Botho of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Hohenstein was elected president of the national society in June 1982.
Prince Botho, who qualified as a medical doctor in the 1950s, was appointed doctor of a German scientific expedition to India in 1955-56.
He worked in the ministry of youth, family and community health from 1972 to 1976 and represented his peers in a top chamber of medical rights from 1969 to 1980 onwards. At the same time, he worked on the government's Committee for Humanitarian Aid.
At the end of a successful career, Prince Botho was appointed as a liaison officer for the German governement in Southwest Asia and, later, in East Africa.
