Sir Evelyn Shuckburgh was a distinguished British diplomat who brought to the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement a good mind, wide vision and diplomatic integrity.

In retirement, Sir Evelyn worked for the British Red Cross and became its chairman in 1970. He was a member of the Standing Commission of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement in 1974-81.

He entered the diplomatic service in 1933. After posts in Egypt and Canada, he spent most of World War Two in Argentina. Post-war post included Prague, the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) and Italy.

Sir Evelyn, who died in 1994 aged 85, left the diplomatic service in 1969. Apart from devoting time to the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, he developed skills as a cabinet maker and reproducing antique clavichords.
