World Disasters Report
International Federation, 2006
This year’s World Disasters Report, to be launched
in December, focuses on neglected crises. It reveals that
in 2005, the world responded more generously to people’s
humanitarian needs than at any time in recent history. Yet
millions still missed out on vital, potentially life-saving
aid because funds were directed at high-profile disasters,
while many other crises were neglected.
Available in English. Summaries in Arabic, French and Spanish.

Mine Action: Preventive activities in the field
ICRC, 2006
Mines and explosive remnants of war continue to kill and
maim civilians long after the last shot has been fired in
a conflict. This concise leaflet outlines the work that the
ICRC carries out to protect civilians from these aftereffects
of armed conflict. From collecting data on mine incidents,
providing safe access to basic needs such as shelter, water
and fuel, and encouraging respect for international humanitarian
law, the many aspects of the ICRC’s preventive mine
action work in the field is explained.
Available in English — French and Spanish to follow

Annual
Report
International Federation, 2006
The Indian Ocean tsunami horrified the world and tested Red
Cross Red Crescent capacities. The Annual Report shows how
disasters such as the tsunami, hurricanes in the Americas,
food insecurity in Africa and the Pakistan earthquake highlighted
the need to build a more agile organization to provide the
most effective disaster response. For the first time, the
financial statements conform to International Financial Reporting
Standards.
Available in Arabic, English, French and Spanish. |

The EHL Virtual Campus
ICRC, 2006
The ICRC has launched a new website, Exploring Humanitarian
Law (EHL) Virtual Campus (www.ehl.icrc.org.), that serves
as a web-based resource centre and online community for the
EHL programme. The objective of this international education
programme is to introduce adolescents between 13 and 18 to
the basic rules and principles of international humanitarian
law (IHL). The EHL Virtual Campus aims to support the growing
EHL community by providing ongoing EHL training and access
to programme resources via the internet. Even though the EHL
Virtual Campus’ primary target audience is teachers
and teacher trainers, the web site is open to the wider public
and contains useful resources for a broad range of IHL practitioners.

Abuse grows hatred
ICRC, 2006
Torture is an affront to humanity and a crime. In addition,
it feeds a cycle of violence, often engendering hatred not
only among those who suffer directly but among entire communities.
Ill-treatment and abuse is prevalent in places of detention
in many countries. The Geneva Conventions prohibit the abuse
of prisoners in wartime. The ICRC has produced a new TV spot
and print ad to support its efforts to prevent torture and
other forms of ill-treatment.

and Red Crescent Movement. It focuses on seven situations
between 2003 and 2005: the conflict in Darfur; the war in

and the earthquake in Pakistan.
